Our Review

The Louvre Abu Dhabi does not just display art. It argues for the interconnectedness of all humanity, and it does so beneath the most breathtaking piece of contemporary architecture in the Middle East. Jean Nouvel designed the massive dome from 7,850 metallic stars layered in a complex geometric lattice, casting what he calls a rain of light. Walking beneath it as the desert sun moves through the panels is a meditative experience that alone justifies the visit. The permanent collection is organized chronologically but across civilizations simultaneously. An Egyptian funerary sphinx stands beside a Greek Kore statue and a Gandharan Buddhist head, not because they are the same, but because the impulse to honor the dead, celebrate beauty, and seek the divine is universal.

Among the strongest pieces are Leonardo da Vinci's La Belle Ferronniere (on long-term loan from the Musee du Louvre), a haunting Bactrian princess figurine dating to approximately 2500 BCE, and Ai Weiwei's massive Fountain of Light, a chandelier-like sculpture referencing revolutionary idealism. The temporary exhibition program is ambitious and consistently excellent, drawing from thirty partner institutions across France.

The building sits on an artificial island, and even the approach is choreographed: you walk along water, through geometrically framed views, before entering. Dining options include the excellent Aptitude cafe. The children's museum is genuinely engaging. Allow three hours minimum.
